Day 4: Lesley Dabson

I’m absolutely thrilled to be sharing this creative (@lesleydabson on Instagram) with you all as I’ve been fangirling her at her exhibitions for the last couple of years!

Please may you introduce yourself and your practice.
I’m Lesley Dabson. I work in oil, both in my studio & en plein air, painting outside.
My style is representational & my biggest passion is for painting. I’m a regular member of the Hesketh Hubbard life drawing society
in London, one of the 9 societies comprising the Federation of British Artists. I’m also an elected member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists & Chelsea Art Society & show regularly with the Royal Society of Marine Artists.

How did you develop your practice?
My development in painting has been pretty organic over the past few years. I did a degree in the ’80’s in Graphic Design, and took a long break from creative work to raise my family. Having picked up my brush again I stumbled on marine painting by chance and found my biggest passion. I have found painting en plein air moves my work forward, and challenges me. Ultimately I just love to paint, daily practice is my most important developer.

What inspires you and why do you love your practice?
The coast, the sea and painting plein air in the environment inspire me. To absorb the atmosphere of my surroundings and paint in the moment is hugely inspirational. Sometimes you are rained on, sometimes you can be freezing or melting in the sun, but when something I see excites me, my challenge is to try to translate the vision into paint.

What does it mean to you to be a creative feminist?
Question 4 is an interesting one. Marine artists tend to be male, and quite often because of my name, people assume I am. In my experience I’ve only ever felt welcomed and comfortable when painting with other marine artists, albeit predominantly male. I believe you have to be the change you want to see.

Please give Lesley a warm welcome to the community by giving her page @lesleydabson on Instagram a follow and by showing her some love in the comments! I’m so delighted to share her work and practice with you all!
