Day 6: Rab Long

I am incredibly excited to share this creative’s (@rabsgram on Instagram) beautifully feminine work with you all.

Please may you introduce yourself and your practice.
Hi I’m Rab. I’m an interior designer and artist.

How did you develop your practice?
My practice has grown quite eclectically and over the years; I have enjoyed increasing the overlap between the disciplines I work with. When designing interiors I always use art as a starting point and hand draw my ideas for client presentation. I always have a sketchbook or my iPad with me because ideas for new artworks or sculptural concepts can come from anywhere!

What inspires you and why do you love your practice?
I have always been drawn to working with the female form and I love noticing elements of mirroring that happen in with form and nature and human behaviour and the way that influences the items we collect and make. There is so much more to the pieces we lust after, buy or design and a lot of that is subconscious, so a lot of my practice is focused on unearthing those roots and connections to our bodies and the shapes that bring us joy and comfort.

What does it mean to you to be a creative feminist?
It’s a privilege to be able to work in a creative field and to be able to spend so much of my time nurturing my interests and developing my practice. So much of my interior design work relies on the various relationships with other makers, designers and trades people and so for me, being open to learning from each of these individuals and approaching projects with a collaborative mindset is a deeply fulfilling way to work.

Outside of my day job, it’s deeply rewarding to be able to support other artists and to engage with them individually or via some of the wonderful panel discussions and talks arranged by creative members clubs such as Marguerite.

Being a creative feminist is about being open to new art forms, conversations and influences and pushing yourself to look outside your own experience so you can be immersed in another’s.
