Day 14: Liana Zhmotova

I am incredibly excited to introduce today’s creative (@a.spiders.web on Instagram) to you all and I’m thrilled to share our first installation artist!

Please may you introduce yourself and your practice.
My name is Liana Zhmotova and I was born in Tbilisi, Georgia. I have been living in London for the last 14 years now and in 2018 I created my first installation – it’s a mixed media self expression.

How did you develop your practice?
It all started in my head a few weeks before it materialised into an installation. I knew I had a vision of what I wanted to share first and foremost with my children, to show them/discuss with them what a long way we as a family have come since my father passed away. I wanted to give them a feeling of belonging, show them where their roots are, who we are as a family, what my job is, why some decision making can be difficult. I wanted to make them proud.

What inspires you and why you love your practice?
My inspiration came from a simple idea of sharing my vision with others. It can be quite daunting – seeing things in your head and not being able to share/discuss with others what you think is so obvious. It’s getting this understanding with others that I wanted to achieve most. When, with the help of my friend, I learned that my ideas could materialise into an installation, I was really driven by the whole project and it didn’t take long to make this happen.

What does it mean to you to be a creative feminist?
I grew up in an environment where women were highly respected and women’s role in the house (if she chose to be a stay at home mom) was sacred and the centre of the family. As a mother of three daughters – to me it’s natural that women can be high achieving, passionate in their jobs and, of course, vocal. Creativity is just one of those areas where one can express oneself doing something different, enjoying solving puzzles of other people’s ideas – it’s exciting as it’s almost always something new, drawing inspiration from ideas that already exist.

Please give the inspirational Liana a warm welcome to the collective by following the exhibition’s page @a.spiders.web on Instagram and by commenting your thoughts below. I have absolutely loved learning about how Liana realises vision into art and I’m absolutely delighted to welcome her onboard!
