Day 15: Holly Fielder

I’ve been a huge fan of today’s creative (@threetwinpalms on Instagram) for years now; her paintings exude elegance and a love for the small things in life which, makes them a joy to behold!

Please may you introduce yourself and your practice.
Hello! My name’s Holly Fielder, I’m currently based in East London and I guess I’m experimenting with the idea of being an artist. I mostly paint in acrylics and sometimes turn these into illustrations.

How did you develop your practice?
I guess I developed my practice through always taking too many photos when I’m travelling. I could spend hours taking photos of people and objects, and then going through them to find something that interests me and makes me want to instantly get painting. Also I often look to others for inspiration, I normally default to staring at Matisse or Picasso’s work or getting lost in an artist’s instagram. I think I’ve lost hours to the designer Laurence Leenaert’s Instagram page, @lrnce. I’m definitely still in the development phase and don’t think I ever want to stop learning!

What inspires you and why do you love your practice?
My work is definitely escapism for me, which is probably why I love it so much. I always feel so lucky to be able to travel, because when I do I feel like a different person. I’m inspired by that feeling of being completely free on holiday. Indulging in hours lazing around under the sun, eating fresh food, drinking wine and being curious and learning from new cultures and people. I’m always drawn to drawing nude figures, relaxed surrounded by the sea or palm trees. I guess I always want to try capture that feeling of being totally carefree, playful and a little self-absorbed?

What does it mean to you to be a creative feminists?
To me, being a creative feminist means a lot! I love being able to paint women that inspire me and have fun with it. The nude implies acceptance and freedom for me which is definitely something I’m always working towards. I’m always grateful for the inspiration that all the other women in my life and around me bring to my creative process.
