Day 26: Deborah Blyth

I have been an admirer of today’s wonderful creative (@deborahblythjewellery on Instagram) for many years now as Deborah is a dear friend of mine and I am in awe of her organic, elegant and timeless designs.

Please may you introduce yourself and your practice?
Hi, I am Deborah Blyth and I am a jewellery designer living in North London. I create organic, textured pieces in Sterling silver and gold vermeil using the lost wax casting process.

How did you develop your practice?
I come from a very creative family and even though I followed a very different career path I have always made things. In 2004 whilst living in Italy surrounded by immense beauty, style and history my jewellery journey began. I am self taught so my designs have developed over the years as I have experimented and learnt new techniques and skills, though always retaining the tactile textured form that is the essence of my style.

What inspires you and why do you love your practice?
I love swimming and the restorative power of water, which began as a child living by the sea. Swimming has been my stress reliever; worries dissolve, spirits lift and it’s where my best ideas are born.

Living in London I am very fortunate to have a wealth of inspiration on my doorstep and the swimming ponds on Hampstead Heath nearby.

I adore the process of creating, playing with a piece of wax or dripping hot wax into water and seeing where it takes me, I do not rigidly plan a design, I have an idea of what I want to create and this how I can freely express myself. My passion for the arts and love of nature combine to influence my process. I love the interaction with customers, when a piece brings pleasure or is gifted to mark a special occasion.

What does it mean to you to be a creative feminist?
I find working and spending time with other creative women hugely rewarding as it is a wonderful support network. We can use creativity as a powerful voice for change “art is a mode of expression which transcends languages and barriers.”

The clear and organic influence of Deborah’s love for water and sea is so present in her enchanting designs; it’s such a treat to learn more about her influences.
