Day 30: Raymond Egbo

Today’s creative’s (@egbocollections on Instagram) is a complete inspiration to me; their passion for creating, their love to celebrate their Nigerian culture and their mission to teach and share their beautiful jewellery and practice with the rest of the world is exactly what this community is all about. It gives me great pleasure, therefore, to welcome @egbocollections to The Creative Feminists.

Please may you introduce yourself and your practice.
Hello my name is Raymond Egbo (@egbocollections), I am a New York born jewellery designer.

How did you develop your practice?
I started my creative journey in apparel/accessories about 8 years ago while in college. I help design men’s accessories and womenswear/menswear with 2 others for 2 years in school. We went separate ways and I took a keen beeline to accessories and jewellery. I have spent the last 6 years teaching myself about jewellery making, production, materials & gems. I still consider myself a fledgling, but I enjoy the path of learning and further developing my practice.

What inspires you and why do you love your practice?
What inspires me is my heritage. I am of Nigerian descent. A lot of my work is inspired by my ties to the culture. I plan for my brand to become the bridge that connects Afro-infused fine jewellery to the world. I love what I do because I love creativity. I love creating beautiful, meaningful pieces that tells a story. I love learning about new cultures and teaching others about them.

What does it mean to you to be a creative feminist?
Women are vital to everyone in the world. They are truly a cornerstone to the progression of life, growth, nurture and love. Being a black man, knowing where I come from, I acknowledge women for being so important to our lives. Their voice matters, their lives matter, their ideals matter, their emotions matter. For one to be a creative feminists is to always believe in your self and to believe in the women (and/or men) who believe in you as well.

Raymond’s love for the creative world around him and his own culture and heritage is beautifully intertwined and represented in his unique and empowering jewellery.
