Day 40: Josie Devine

Despite her inner critic and imposter syndrome, today’s creative feminist’s (@byjosiedevine) innate skill, love and appreciation for representing the female nude brightly shines out of her beautiful blue signature paintings. I give you the über elegant Josie!

Please may you introduce yourself and your practice.
My name is Josie Devine (@byjosiedevine on Instagram), I’m a Scottish painter, illustrator and copywriter based in Brixton.

How did you develop your practice?
My passion for making things is something I can always remember having – cue flashbacks of being the insufferable teachers pet in art lessons. I didn’t go to art school because I decided to study English Literature at uni (I’m also a major book nerd), but I managed to keep the art thing alive as a hobby. A few years ago I started going to life drawing drop-in classes on the reg, and now, after years of being told I should sell my work and not feeling ‘good enough’, I’ve decided to ditch my inner critic and see what happens.

What inspires you and why do you love your practice?
I would say I have a pretty mixed style; I love using fluid lines and brushstrokes to create minimal nudes, portraits and hand gestures (not as rude as it sounds), but also adore more detailed botanical paintings. I’m inspired by classical nudes, Post-Impressionist painters, and just going for walks in nature.

What does it mean to you to be a creative feminist?
To me, being a creative feminist means denying my innate imposter syndrome, having the confidence to take up space, and to support other amazing creative women who are making things happen.

I absolutely love to see Josie’s beautiful, bold and distinctive blue brushstrokes pop up on my Instagram feed; they ooze elegance and glamour. Please give Josie a very warm and fabulous welcome to the fem fam by following her page on Instagram – @byjosiedevine and by commenting your thoughts and love below! Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us Josie and for ditching the inner critic; your work gives me so much joy and I’m sure the fem fam will feel the same way too.
