Day 48: Britt

There is so much I’m dying to celebrate and say about today’s creative feminist (@madebybrittshop on Instagram) but first, can we just pause to take in these STUNNING journals. They. Are. A. Work. Of. Art.

Please may you introduce yourself and your practice.
Hello! My name is Britt (@madebybrittshop), I’m a collage artist living in Brooklyn, NY and I make handmade, one-of-a-kind journals using images from used magazines and art books.

How did you develop your practice?
I have always been a journaler since childhood. It’s something that is very therapeutic for me and is an amazing way to be able to record and revisit my personal growth. As a teenager, I started collaging my journals. I found that putting images that spoke to me on my journals made my practice even better. So, over time, I started making them as gifts for people which lead me to opening my etsy shop!

What inspires you and why do you love your practice?
I am inspired by bold, vibrant colors as well as images of people being strong and confident. I love my practice because I believe in the transformative power of journaling. So making journals for people to fill with whatever they want feels very fulfilling to me.

What does it mean to you to be a creative feminist?
To be a creative feminist, to me, means making sure the work I’m putting out empowers women. I want to make work that speaks to women and makes them feel seen. Although I know I have a partly male clientele, I am aware that my customer base is predominately women and I couldn’t be happier about that! I was also very scared and nervous to start this small business of mine. So, if anything, I want to be an example that, as a woman, you can be your own boss and make money with your natural talents!

From Britt’s love of the therapeutic process of journaling to the combination of the artist on the outside of the journal (Britt) paired with the writer / artist on the inside of the journal, I’m utterly blown away by the beauty and thoughtfulness of Britt’s practice and journals. I’m dying to get my mitts on one. So, please give Britt the incredibly warm welcome to the fem fam she deserves by following her page on Instagram –@madebybrittshop and by commenting your thoughts below.
