Day 53: Willa Bardawil

As we step into July, a month filled with promise of sunshine and picnics, it is the perfect time to celebrate today’s creative feminist’s (@willlemien on Instagram) utterly breathtaking depictions of the rich colour and beauty found in this season’s dog days.

Please may you introduce yourself and your practice.
My name is Willa Bardawil, I am an artist living in west London and creator of @willlemien. I draw and paint illustrations primarily using ink, pastel and watercolour.

How did you develop your practice?
I have a background of working in fashion but whilst my job has been on pause, quarantine life has led me to rediscover and delve into my art. For me, art has always been a great way to relax, have fun and bring joy to those around me. I have been practicing everyday and there’s no going back!

What inspires you and why do you love your practice?
As my practice flourished during lockdown, I found my inspiration around the house, scrolling through Instagram, admiring baroque and neoclassical paintings and using my imagination to dream of freer days. I love my practice because it shares a love for life and a gratitude of being a human capable of so much on this earth.

What does it mean to you to be a creative feminist?
For me being a creative female in this day is being free and confident to express yourself and your work. It’s scary to put yourself out there but the amount we learn from those around us is invaluable. So keep persisting with whatever your passion is, you will only get better and remember life is supposed to be fun so make sure you enjoy what your doing.

I am finding it hard to articulate just how delicate yet overwhelmingly stunning Willa’s work is. Willa’s effervescent love for living life to its fullest creates an unmistakeable, signature charm within her artwork. As you can tell, I am thrilled to share Willa’s words with you all, so please do show her a warm welcome by following her page @willlemien on Instagram and by commenting your love and thoughts below. It truly gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the fem fam Willa, your work makes me so excited for the warm months that lay ahead.
