Day 57: Ruth Njeri

It is a joy to see how today’s creative feminist (@artbyruth_nj) loves to challenge and create new colour combinations and shapes within her utterly mesmerising and rich art. Ruth’s love for these two key components are evident within the multiple styles, mediums and techniques that she effortlessly oscillates between in her incredible practice.

Please may you introduce yourself and your practice.
Hi Beautiful Souls, l am Ruth or you can call me Njeri (@artbyruth_nj)! l am a 26 year artist based in Dubai. l am an expat here in Dubai but l was raised in the UK and born in Kenya.

How did you develop your practice?
I studied fine art for my degree and I am also a qualified teacher. Quarantine has given me time to reflect and follow my passion for painting.

What inspires you and why do you love your practice?
I represent my African/Black Heritage in my pieces as it reminds me of my life in Africa. Colour and shapes are two things in Art I find intriguing. I use them as tools to express myself and to find peace within. Some of my work can been seen as abstract as I tend to manipulate shapes and forms to their simplest form in order to challenge the viewer to think deeper and build a connection with my work. I don’t want the viewer to just see the obvious subject but instead to be submerged in to the work.

What does it mean to you to be a creative feminist?
To me it means empowering people! Giving women a voice! Spreading awareness and also being unapologetically you.

I am blown away by not only the incredible skill that is exercised within Ruth’s work, but the clear expression of inner peace that is felt by artist and subsequent viewer, which graces each and every piece that Ruth produces. The vibrant and rich colours within Ruth’s work create the most beautiful energy, that draws me in time and time again. Please show Ruth a wonderfully warm welcome to the fem fam by following her page @artbyruth_nj and by commenting your thoughts below! I am delighted to welcome you and your sensational artwork into our loving lil community Ruth!
